Louis est né le 1er janvier 1900, dans un village viticole adossé à une colline, entre Carcassonne et Béziers.
Il a connu une enfance austère et rude, ponctuée par les crises qui secouaient le Midi, les méventes, les chutes des cours, les révoltes. Subissant, dans les années vingt, l'influence de personnages mi-anarchistes, mi-socialistes, il s'engage bientôt, à la fureur de sa famille, dans ce qui va devenir le parti communiste.
Dès lors, il partage sa vie entre ses activités de militant et son métier de viticulteur, d'abord comme salarié, puis peu à peu, en achetant ses propres terres. En réalité, sa vie fut dominée et illuminée par une seule passion, l'amour de son terroir, de ses saisons, de ses ciels, de ses couleurs.
Jean-Louis Magnon a recueilli propos et souvenirs alors que, vieillissant, Louis voyait chaque jour le cerner de plus près un modernisme qu'il n'aimait ni ne comprenait. L'ouvrage est un hommage au courage et à la ténacité d'une race d'hommes qui a sans doute disparu aujourd'hui.
