Los Angeles, 1991. Maximilien Ophuls, notable américain, ex-ambassadeur des Etats-Unis en Inde, devenu chef de la lutte antiterroriste en Amérique, est égorgé en plein jour, devant chez sa fille illégitime India. Il a été abattu par son chauffeur cachemiri, un mystérieux personnage se faisant appeler Shalimar le clown. Tout semble d'abord indiquer un assassinat plitique, mais s'agit en fait d'un crime passionnel d'une nature très spéciale. Voici l'histoire de Maximilien, de son assassin et de sa fille -ainsi que d'un quatrième personnage, la femme qui unit leurs destins. L'histoire d'un amour profond qui connait une fin tragique, au fil d'une épopée qui s'étend de la Californie à la France sous l'Occupation, l'Angleterre et, surtout, le Cachemire. Au coeur de ce récit se trouve un paradis terrestre peuplé de pechers et d'abeilles, de montagnes et de lacs, de femmes aux yeux couleur d'émeraude et d'hommes assassins : un paradis détuit, anéanti plutot que perdu.
Couvrant le globe et traversant l'Histoire, le nouveau récit de Salman Rushdie séduit dès les premières pages et capte l'esprit d'une époque bouleversée et bouleversante.
